Effect of Frosting on Date Palm in Saudi Arabia<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0When the temperature drops down to – 6 and -10 C degrees for six hours or more in two consecutive nights, date Palm tissues freezes. This occurs especially in the stem at the area below the crown. Cells are killed in the frosted zone and become easy prey for Chalara paradoxa (Theilaviopsis), the causal agent of black scorch disease in the palm. This leads to neck rot that develops in 3-5 weeks leading to bending and braking of the stem under the crown which we call neck rot.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0The varieties and trees differ in their susceptibility to the fungus under these circumstances, and Barhe variety was rapidly affected by this conditions and in one week more than four thousand fruitful palm trees were killed in one farm. The photos (2008 )are in Al-Huwais farm in the Onaiza region in Saudi Arabia, most of them were of the Al-Barahi variety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
